ELSO's Early Career Award is an annual prize intended to recognise a woman or a man who has made a very significant contribution to the molecular life sciences during their early career as an independent scientist in Europe.
The award normally goes to someone who obtained his or her PhD less than 10 years ago, but exceptional circumstances, such as a career break to care for family, are taken into account.
The call for nominations is sent out to ELSO members in early March.
Nominations should be submitted to the Career Development Committee by sending an e-mail to elso-cdcforum@elso.org before the announced deadline around mid-April, but nominations may also be submitted any time during the course of the year before the call. They should include the name of the scientist you wish to nominate, the name and address of the institution where he or she currently works, and their e-mail address. Your nominee must be working in Europe. ELSO will then ask all nominees to submit their curricula vitae directly to the organization.
The winner is selected by the members of ELSO's Career Development Committee, who use an independent and democratic voting system. The winner is announced in early August both in The ELSO Gazette and in e-mail messages to ELSO members.
The prize of Euro 1000,-- was sponsored in 2004 by the science publisher Elsevier, and also by Carl Zeiss Jena who provided a fine pair of binoculars for the winner. In addition, the winner each year has the opportunity to present her or his work in the prize lecture at the annual ELSO meeting.
